Access to Pet Spay/Neuter Looks Different Post-Pandemic, But It’s Still the Best Option for Saving Lives and Reducing the National Pet Crisis

(Anywhere, USA — February 18, 2025) – Puppies and kittens are increasingly impacting shelter populations, and as cute as they are, pet adoptions aren’t keeping pace with intake. This imbalance makes it more crucial than ever to seek out spay/neuter resources for pets, according to United Spay Alliance, (USA) a national nonprofit which promotes affordable, accessible, and timely spay/neuter services.

February 25 is World Spay Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits of spaying and neutering pets.

Lori McMaster is the CEO of Helping Our Miniature Equines, also known as HOME, an organization dedicated to rescuing unwanted miniature horses and donkeys and finding them loving, forever homes. Lori and her partner Barbara Gordon founded the organization in response to the high number of animals in Southern auctions and kill pens, coupled with the growing demand for miniature equines in the Pacific Northwest. Each of HOME’s equines receives all necessary physical and mental services including veterinary, dental, farrier, nutritional, training, and socialization. With a passionate team of up to 100 volunteers, HOME has successfully adopted out over 70 miniature equines since its inception.

When her son, Cooper, suggested attaching something to the leash, Jenni had an epiphany, discovering a simple solution that would make her walks more convenient and enjoyable.

Chance Palmer is the founder and owner of Pet Popcorn, a company that manufactures single-ingredient, freeze-dried treats for dogs and cats. Chance’s idea originated when his family purchased a freeze dryer to create healthier snacks for their pets, Lolly and Asher. The name Pet Popcorn was inspired by the way freeze-dried ground beef resembles popcorn, with its light, inflated texture. Chance was a full-time student at Colorado University when he launched the business, often sacrificing nights and weekends to get Pet Popcorn off the ground. However, his passion for the venture made it feel more like a rewarding pursuit than a chore.

Justine Sanchez and Dallas Gudgell are the president and vice president, respectively, of Buffalo Field Campaign. Buffalo Field Campaign is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and documenting the ongoing mistreatment of wild bison. The organization operates a 12.5-acre lodge that hosts volunteers from mid-November through the end of May each year, and provides them with food, gear, and training. In return, volunteers patrol the wild migratory buffalo habitat to ensure the safety of the bison.

Melanie Simmonds is the director of Soft Landings Waterfowl Rescue, a nonprofit corporation committed to rescuing and rehoming abandoned domestic waterfowl, as well as providing care and sanctuary for those with special needs. After reading the poignant passage “Postcard from Your Duck,” Melanie was inspired to volunteer at her local duck rescue, Feathered Angels Waterfowl Sanctuary. She quickly fell in love with the ducks, taking over the operation with her husband Mark in 2019, and rebranding it as Soft Landings.
