This week, on All My Children Wear Fur Coats, Monique Brignoni delved into the significance of unconditional love and the importance of staying present throughout an animal’s end-of-life process.

Monique Brignoni is a sacred pet death doula and trainer with over a decade of experience. The loss of her beloved cat, Rami, inspired Monique to study the terminal phase of animal lives, transforming challenging moments into a path of healing. She has helped hundreds of pet owners deepen their bonds with their animals and find peace in their pets’ final moments.

Monique explained that pet parents often develop tunnel vision when caring for a terminally ill pet, fixating on the worst-case scenario. Monique says, “When we succumb to fear, we become disconnected from what truly matters—the deep love we share with our animals.” She stressed the importance of staying loving and calm, warning against projecting negative energy onto your pet. She identified emotional awareness as a key component in unlocking divine love. She also emphasized the importance of properly preparing for death to minimize the panic that can ensue.

One practical tool Monique suggested was finding the strength to stay fully present in the moment. Since animals lack a rational mind, the concept of dying now to avoid pain later does not exist in their experience. Furthermore, it’s crucial to focus on your pet’s current needs rather than worrying about their future suffering. She noted that, regardless of an animal’s diagnosis, you must remember to pause, smile, and simply enjoy their presence. Monique recommended focusing on something you love about your pet, such as their soft, fuzzy ears. Explore more practical tools by downloading Monique’s Petwise app.

Monique discussed her views on veterinary euthanasia. From her perspective, euthanasia is frequently employed more ofte than it should be, with many individuals opting for the procedure out of personal fears rather than the animal’s genuine suffering. She explained that with a proper understanding of the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of death, a peaceful natural death is entirely possible for most pets.
