In a recent episode of All My Children Wear Fur Coats, we met up with Dr. Pol and Diane Pol at Global Pet Expo 2024 (our third time meeting them), to hear about their recent activities including their new line of pet food, animal feed, and wellness products.
Dr. Pol’s love for animals began on his family’s dairy farm in the Netherlands. At a young age, he knew he wanted to become a veterinarian. Dr. Pol attended Utrecht University and graduated in 1970. After practicing veterinarian medicine for over a decade, he moved to Weidman, Michigan to start his own practice. In 2011, Dr. Pol teamed up with Nat Geo WILD to showcase his experience as a veterinarian. The show followed Dr. Pol as he travelled throughout rural Michigan, tending to various animals for 14 hours a day.
Dr. Pol detailed the nutritional advantages of his pet food products. His dog and cat food lines are comprised of dried meat. He noted the benefits of a simple, carnivorous diet for household pets. When the Pols examined their competitors’ pet food packages, they were surprised to learn that the majority listed corn as a primary ingredient. Although some animals can consume corn safely, some don’t handle it as well. Furthermore, corn consumption may result in allergy problems.
Additionally, Dr. Pol recently released his own cat litter. Unlike most cat litter on the market, Dr. Pol’s is fully biodegradable. It’s made from wood so it can be used in a garden or fireplace without issue. He also expanded his new line to include first aid products like the Incredi-Pol wound gel and wound spray. These products are not antibacterial.
They are intended to increase blood flow to the wound and reduce healing time. Dr. Pol explained how this formula comes in handy for abrasions. In case your pet licks the gel or spray, Dr. Pol assured us that it is non-toxic.
After discussing his new product line, Dr. Pol shared some of his experiences as a veterinarian and provided safety tips. He emphasized the importance of “being smarter than your pet,” by ensuring that any potential hazards are inaccessible. According to Pol, underwear and socks are among the most common household items that he removes during surgery.
