Fluff Trough – Debra Mastic

Recently, on All My Children Wear Fur Coats, Debra Mastic highlighted the limitations of conventional pet bowls and explained how the Fluff Trough promotes a more comfortable, health-conscious dining experience for pets.

Debra Mastic is the founder and CEO of Fluff Trough, a company that produces ergonomic feeders for dogs and cats. Debra invented the Fluff Trough to address the mealtime needs of her pug, Pork Chop. Like many pugs, Pork Chop’s facial shape made it difficult for him to eat comfortably from traditional dog bowls. When he was diagnosed with vestibular disease, Pork Chop’s problems worsened, inspiring Debra to 3-D print the first Fluff Trough prototype. After receiving positive feedback from other pet owners, Debra realized her product’s potential. She used the money she was saving to purchase a home to bring Fluff Trough to the market.

The Cat Network – Jill Steinberg

Jill Steinberg holds the positions of secretary, treasurer, and board member at The Cat Network. Founded in 1995, The Cat Network is a nonprofit organization that educates the public on the necessity of spay/neuter and provides low-cost spay/neuter services for homeless, stray, and abandoned cats. Additionally, The Cat Network acts as an adoption referral service, facilitating adoptions by finding homes for fostered cats.

Taking Care of Your Pet After You Are Gone

When real estate mogul Leona Helmsley died, she earmarked $12 million for the care of her white Maltese lapdog, Trouble. Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld left $1.5 million for his cat, Choupette. And a recently deceased New York City woman put $100,000 in a trust for her 32 pet cockatiels along with instructions that they be fed ­natural birdfeed, carrots and popcorn.

It’s easy to snicker about estate planning for an animal. But if you regard your pets as important members of your family, you may want to ensure that they are provided for after your death. The challenge: Under the inheritance laws in all 50 states, pets are considered tangible personal property, no different than a car or jewelry. You cannot directly leave money to an animal in your will.

Daria Tavana is the Development Director of The Street Dog Coalition, an organization that hosts pop-up street clinics in over 60 cities throughout the United States. Volunteers including veterinarians, vet techs, and social workers contribute to the clinics by providing complimentary services like vaccinations, spay/neuter vouchers, and other preventative health measures. The Street Dog Coalition also educates its clients on the best ways to care for their pets, in consideration of local weather and the animal’s individual health needs.

Erica Messer is a board-certified pet bereavement specialist. After the loss of her beloved cat, Wolfgang, Erica suffered through a tremendously difficult grieving process. Through this experience, she noticed a lack of suitable resources for coping with pet loss. To assist those facing similar circumstances, Erica founded Wolfie’s Wish, a company specializing in sympathy cards designed specifically for mourning pet owners. Wolfie’s Wish grieving cards offer daily affirmations and practices that guide individuals in navigating their emotions and advancing on their path towards healing.
