Recently, on All My Children Wear Fur Coats, Dr. Terry Fossum discussed the nuances of the pet supplement market and divulged the science behind Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care.

Dr. Terry Fossum is the CEO and founder of Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care, a pet wellness brand that offers a variety of supplements to support cognitive function, mobility, and comfort for pets. With a background as a renowned veterinary surgeon, Dr. Fossum has an extensive history of dedicated service to animals, ensuring their health and well-being throughout her career. She is the author of Senior Dogs: The Essential Guide to Maximize Quality Time With Your Best Friend, a book that features surveys to help you evaluate the progression of your dog’s aging.

Dr. Fossum’s foray into the world of pet supplements began when she was disappointed by the existing nutraceuticals on the market. In her quest to find a suitable treatment for her elderly Labrador, who was struggling with congenital lesions and kidney issues, she began researching pet CBD supplements. She found that a concerning number of these supplements did not meet their label claims, with some lacking CBD entirely. What was even more disheartening was discovering that many of these products contained higher levels of THC than advertised, posing potential toxicity risks for dogs. Dr. Fossum explained that animal supplements are excluded from the regulatory oversight that governs human supplements, meaning that products that fall into this category are not subject to any type of approval process.

Fossum explained that pet products fall into a few classifications. Food additives and pharmaceuticals must receive FDA approval before reaching the market, but nutraceuticals are exempt from this requirement. Securing FDA approval for a drug can cost tens of millions of dollars and often takes years to complete. Since Dr. Fossum wishes to help as many animals as possible, she opts to maintain affordable pricing for her products by categorizing them as a supplement rather than a drug or food additive.

Of all the nutraceuticals that Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care is developing, Dr. Fossum is most excited about their oleander anti-itch formula. The product inhibits the release of cytokines that are responsible for inflammation and itchiness. Dr. Fossum explained that oleander has also shown potential for cancer prevention due to its effects on senescent cells—cells that have stopped dividing but are not dead. She highlighted the value in conducting cancer research on dogs, noting that dogs are genetically similar to humans, yet have a significantly higher cancer rate.
